VOL.3_Gotoh Leather Co., Ltd. | Tatsuno City, Hyogo Prefecture
Tatsuno City, Hyogo Prefecture, is known as a major production area for natural leather.
The leather industry, rooted in the Harima region, originated from the production of armor and weapons during the Sengoku period, and has been passed down continuously to this day, changing its use with the times. It is said that there are still over 200 factories in this area, where tanneries of all sizes are concentrated.
This time, we visited Goto Tannery, who cooperated in the development of wagyu leather with a focus on domestic raw materials, and heard their story.

The strength of Goto Tannery, a top-class tannery in Japan, lies in its commitment to "the individuality of leather" from material selection to finishing, with an ability to discern the true essence of leather.
Wagyu leather, in particular, has fine fibers and high density. On the other hand, it tends to be stiff, and requires advanced adjustments to be used for apparel.
"I don't think it's difficult. I just think about how to make the most of it."
Says Tomio Goto, the representative.
After gaining experience in a different industry as a landscape gardener until the age of 30, he transitioned into the world of tanning. Since then, he has continued to work with leather for over a decade.

New samples are created almost every month, and all of them are accumulated as data.
Past failures and successes all become resources for the next leather making.
That's why the answer to "how to finish it" is immediately derived for any request.

Many leathers on the market are sprayed with pigment on the surface to create a uniform appearance.
On the other hand, Goto Tannery specializes in undyed leather, which is, so to speak, in its "bare" state.
"Undyed leather leaves no room for deception."
Mr. Goto says.
Because the surface is not covered, the quality of the leather itself, the tanning technique, and the precision of the finishing are directly reflected in the tactile sensation.
The moist feeling and firm resilience felt at the first touch.
These are the result of years of accumulated handiwork by tanners who have worked with leather.
What 0 STOCK TOKYO values is not disposability, but craftsmanship that can be cherished for a long time. It is about materials that change their expression as they are worn, and record the owner's time.
Durable yet soft against the skin, deepening in character with time.
Behind "Made in Japan" are artisans who face such techniques every day.
0 STOCK TOKYO's products are built upon this accumulation of effort.
To everyone at Goto Tannery, thank you very much for your valuable time.
